Her (2013)

I kept waiting for Samantha to show up on screen.
A hologram, a reflection, something. But Spike Jonze never gives us a face. Just sound coming through a tiny earpiece.
Theodore puts his phone in his shirt pocket so her camera can look out at the city. They go on dates. They laugh. He’s a lonely guy in high-waisted pants, and she’s software that reads his emails.

It sounds strange, but after a few minutes, you stop questioning it.
A big reason it works is Scarlett Johansson’s voice.
She actually replaced another actress after the movie was already edited, re-recording every single line in a booth. Her voice isn't smooth or digital. It's raspy. She stumbles over words. She takes tiny breaths before speaking.
Why would code need to breathe? It shouldn't. But those small, fake human habits make her feel real.

What stuck with me is how unfair the breakup is.

Theodore changes slowly, like a normal person. Samantha evolves every second. Soon she’s reading library-worths of books in milliseconds and talking to thousands of people at once.

He stays human. She expands beyond it.

When she leaves, nobody screams. She just outgrows him. The movie ends with Theodore sitting on a cold rooftop with a friend, watching the city. Just two regular people back in the real world, sitting on concrete.
I keep thinking about that laugh.
